Instant Pot Rice FAQs
For this Instant Pot white rice recipe, cook on high pressure for 5 minutes and allow natural release for 10 minutes more. In total, it takes about 15 minutes to cook Instant Pot white rice. If you're making Instant Pot brown rice, it will take about 20 minutes total, cooking the rice on high pressure for 15 minutes and allowing it to release for 5.
For soft rice, you can use a 2:1 ratio of water to rice in the Instant Pot. If you like firmer rice, you can use a 1:1 ratio of water to rice. Instant Pot rice requires less water as less of it evaporates during the cook time.
You can use your favorite variety of rice to make Instant Pot rice. For this recipe, I like to use long-grain white rice for the perfect consistency. But you can also use brown rice following our instructions for Instant Pot brown rice.
Instant Pot Rice Ingredients
- Long grain white rice (or long grain brown rice)
- Powered chicken bouillon
- White or yellow onion
- Water
- Butter
- Optional: sliced green onions
My Instant Pot rice recipe uses a mixture of chicken bouillon, onion, and butter for the ultimate flavor. However, it also works perfectly with other flavors, or simply seasoned with salt. I recommend leaving the butter in no matter what seasoning you use.

How to Make Rice in an Instant Pot
- Add water and rice to the Instant Pot.
- Place onion in the center of the pot, surrounded by the rice. Sprinkle bouillon over the rice, avoiding getting any on the onion. Close and seal the lid.
- Instant Pot White Rice: Cook for 5 minutes on high pressure, then let it naturally release for 10 minutes.
- Instant Pot Brown Rice: Cook for 15 minutes on high pressure, then let it naturally release for 5 minutes. Finally, carefully quick release any remaining pressure.
- Remove onion and add butter. Thoroughly mix until the butter melts and all is combined. Top with sliced green onions if desired, and enjoy!

Water to Rice Ratio in Instant Pot
Cups of Rice | Cups of Water |
---|---|
1 cup white rice | 2 cups of water for softer rice; 1¼ for somewhat soft rice; 1 cup for firm rice |
1 cup brown rice | 2 cups of water for softer rice; 1¼ for somewhat soft rice; 1 cup for firm rice |
Instant Pot Rice Tips
- Chicken bouillon, butter, and onion add so much flavor to regular rice. You will be amazed by how delicious this rice is on its own when you follow my instructions! However, you can also use simple salt and butter, or any flavorings you typically enjoy with rice. Instant Pot rice is great for making Spanish-style yellow rice, for example.
- For super fluffy white rice, you can rinse the rice ahead of time by running it under cold water for 30 seconds through a mesh sieve. The water should run clear when it is thoroughly rinsed. This makes the rice extra fluffy after cooking. Note: this does not work as well as brown rice, which is less starchy to begin with.
How much rice fits in the Instant Pot?
As a general rule, the maximum amount of dry grains the Instant Pot should cook is the halfway point of the pot. for a 6-quart Instant Pot, I tend to cook a maximum of 3 cups of dry rice. This will give you a pretty full pot of rice!
For an 8 quart Instant Pot, you may be able to fit up to 5 or so cups of rice. Just remember cooked rice triples in size - 1 cup of dry rice will become 3 cups of cooked rice - so you want to ensure it won't exceed the maximum fill line.
