These crave-worthy grilled potatoes are a perfect side dish for your next summer barbecue or family gathering. Using only simple ingredients and coming together in just over 30 minutes, you are not going to believe how delicious this grilled side dish can be!

Side Dishes for BBQ

I love grilling season, and when it comes to making side dishes on the grill, crispy grilled potatoes are no exception! After making grill potatoes in foil, I thought, "why not just put a baking dish right on the grill?" Seriously, clean-up is a breeze!

The wonderfully charred and smoky flavors of the grill complement my seasoning for roasting smaller potatoes so well. They are full of savory garlic flavor, perfect as a side dish for beef, pork, chicken, seafood, and vegetables!

This is a minimal prep recipe, and I love how I can just put the potatoes on the grill with whatever else I am making. It is a great way to time out everything so we can sit down together to enjoy a meal. Kids will love these potatoes and, well, the adults will too!

Grilled Potatoes Recipe Ingredients

  • Large russet potatoes or potatoes of your choice
  • Garlic powder
  • Sea salt
  • Peper
  • Olive oil

How to Grill Potatoes

  1. Heat grill to medium heat.
  2. Add garlic powder, sea salt, and pepper to a bowl. Mix together to combine.

  3. Grease a baking dish with cooking spray. Cut russet potatoes into evenly-sized cubes, then add them to the dish.

  4. Pour olive oil over the potatoes. Sprinkle with a spoonful of combined seasoning and stir to fully mix together, then add another spoonful and mix again. Continue to season the potatoes this way to evenly season them.

  5. Add the baking dish to the grill over medium heat. Cook for 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes.

  6. Remove from the grill once fork-tender and crispy. Serve and enjoy!

Potatoes on the Grill Recipe Tips

  • Always cut potatoes as evenly as possible before roasting or grilling to insure even cooking.
  • Make sure to stir your potatoes every 10 minutes throughout the duration of the cooking time.
  • Do not cover the potatoes in foil, you want the smoke to get in there and you do not want to steam them!
  • Be sure your baking dish or tray fits in the grill before you start cooking.

Should potatoes be cooked before grilling?

If you want to cook potatoes before grilling them, the best method is to boil them first to ensure even cooking. With this recipe for grilled potatoes, boiling the potatoes first is not necessary, because the potatoes will finish in a baking dish on the grill. This will allow them to cook evenly as if they were being roasted.

How do I keep my potatoes from burning on the grill?

The best way to keep potatoes from burning on the grill is to monitor heat levels. You wouldn't want your grill at the same temperature as when you are cooking meat. Put down a thin layer of foil and be sure to check the potatoes and stir them if you notice they are cooking too fast. I recommend stirring every 10 minutes.

How long are grilled potatoes good for?

Grilled potatoes are good when kept in a sealed, airtight container for up to 4 days in the refrigerator.

Best Potatoes for Grilling

I like to use russet potatoes for this grilled potatoes recipe because they have a higher starch content, meaning they can withstand the heat of the grill better than other varieties.

However, because these potatoes are not directly touching the grill, you can substitute whichever variety you like most! The most important thing to remember is no matter what type of potato you are using, cut each one roughly the same size.

This will help the potatoes cook evenly and within the same amount of time. Other potatoes for grilling include:

  • Petite Red
  • Fingerling
  • Purple Potatoes

Crispy Grilled Potatoes Variations

My grilled potatoes are delightful on their own. I love how tender they are with the right amount of savory garlic and the smoky flavors on the grill.

These potatoes also work as a fantastic base for some really fun ways to spruce up your side.

For these variations, use the same recipe and instructions then follow below. Here are a few ideas:

  • Loaded Grilled Baked Potatoes: After the potatoes are cooked, sprinkle them with ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese, and ½ cup cooked diced bacon. Place the potatoes back under the grill for an additional 5 minutes or until cheese is melted and the bacon is extra crispy. Add a few dollops of sour cream and a quick sprinkle of chopped chives!
  • Ranch Seasoned Grilled Potatoes: Use the same seasoning blend from this recipe, but cut the garlic powder to ½ tablespoon and add 1 tablespoon of dried ranch seasoning to the potatoes. After they are cooked, garnish with a quick mixture of ½ teaspoon dried dill and ½ teaspoon fresh parsley.
  • Buffalo Grilled Potatoes: To this recipe, I like to add roasted onions for the ultimate flavor punch! Add ½ sliced sweet onion to the potatoes then mix and cook according to recipe instructions. Once the potatoes are cooked, drizzle ½ cup of your favorite buffalo sauce to the potatoes and place back under the grill for 5 more minutes or until bubbly. Toss the potatoes and garnish them with fresh blue cheese crumbles.

What to Serve with Grilled Potatoes

My grilled potatoes are the perfect side for any of your main dish favorites, but perfect for BBQ!

I serve these potatoes straight out of the baking dish they are grilled in, but for more elegant affairs a simple white serving dish and a sprinkling of fresh parsley will do.

Here's what I like to serve my grilled potatoes with:

  • Grilled Shrimp Kabobs: A little olive oil, smoked paprika, and fresh cracked pepper is all you need, layered up with big chunks of bell pepper, onions, and pineapple. Grill for 4-5 minutes on each side or until shrimp is pink and no longer translucent. Smother in your favorite BBQ sauce, or serve as is with just the rub!
  • Southern BBQ Cookout: Smoked pork shoulder is the star of this layout, which I like cooked in the smoker. I like to use a 4-5 pound pork butt (or pork shoulder) with a simple rub of ½ cup brown sugar, ¼ cup sweet paprika, 1 tablespoon chili powder, 2 tablespoons salt, 1 tablespoon garlic powder, 1 tablespoon onion powder, 1 tablespoon black pepper, 1 tablespoon mustard powder, and 2 teaspoons cumin.
  • Classic Grilled Ribeye: What is better than grilled steak and potatoes!? A nice marbled ribeye is perfect for the grill. I like to use 1 inch thick cut ribeye and grill 5-6 minutes per side over medium-high heat for a perfect medium-rare (or until meat thermometer reads  130°F).

Ingredients
  

  • 6 large Russet potatoes
  • 1½ tablespoons garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • ½ cup olive oil
