Best Air Fryer Asparagus Recipe

Have you ever had those moments where you're cooking a full meal, and the side dishes take longer than the main course? Especially when it comes to roasting vegetables. I prefer to have everything all done at once, and after a long day, the more quickly it's done, the better! That's what makes roasting vegetables in the air fryer an amazing solution.

I love good old-fashioned roasted asparagus, but nothing could be easier than using the air fryer. My favorite part about it is you get the pleasure of fried food, without any of the guilt! They are so delicious, crisp, and cooked to perfection.

These easy, crispy asparagus fries are not only super delicious, but they take just 10 minutes total to make, from prep work to air frying. You can even follow this recipe for other vegetables, like zucchini, broccoli, and cauliflower, and dip those in the lemon garlic aioli, too.

Asparagus Fries Recipe Tips

  • Always be mindful of how thick your asparagus is. Thicker asparagus could use more cooking time, while thinner asparagus may not require as much.
  • Fresh, homemade breadcrumbs add an extra something special to the asparagus. If using store bought, the fresher the better.
  • For best results, trim your asparagus.

Asparagus Fries FAQs

Can I make asparagus fries if I don't have an air fryer?

To make asparagus fries using your regular oven, follow the recipe up to where you dredge and coat the asparagus in flour, egg wash, and breadcrumbs. Preheat oven to 425°F. Lightly oil a baking sheet or coat with nonstick spray. Place asparagus in a single layer onto the prepared baking sheet. Place into oven and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.

Can I use panko instead of breadcrumbs?

You can use panko instead of breadcrumbs to make air fried asparagus fries if you prefer. Panko is a Japanese-style breadcrumb and is a great substitution for other breadcrumbs.

How long does air fried asparagus last?

Asparagus fries are best when enjoyed fresh out of the air fryer, but cooked asparagus can last in the fridge for up to 3 days. Store in an airtight container and, for best results, reheat in the air fryer for 3 minutes at the original frying temperature.

Why are my air fryer asparagus fries not crispy?

For the crispiest asparagus fries, be sure to preheat your air fryer. It needs to be nice and hot before the asparagus fries go in. Dredge the asparagus and thoroughly shake off any excess flour. Always use fresh breadcrumbs, and give your asparagus enough time to crisp up in the air fryer. All of these steps will ensure crispy asparagus fries.

How long does lemon garlic aioli last in the refrigerator?

Lemon garlic aioli is best if kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 10 days.

Is lemon garlic aioli gluten-free?

My lemon garlic aioli recipe is naturally gluten-free!

How to Trim Asparagus

Before cooking your asparagus air fryer recipe, start by trimming the asparagus. Asparagus has a “woody” end that is stringy and should be trimmed off before cooking.

  1. Hold the woody end of the asparagus between your thumb and index finger and bend it until it snaps off. It should snap cleanly off.
  2. Neatly stack your remaining asparagus spears next to the asparagus you snapped. Use it as a guide to cut off the woody ends of the remaining asparagus using a sharp kitchen knife.

Gluten-Free Instructions

You can make gluten-free air fryer asparagus fries by swapping out the flour and breadcrumbs with gluten-free flour and either gluten-free breadcrumbs or gluten-free panko.

Vegan Instructions

To make these air fryer asparagus fries vegan, use a vegan egg alternative such as a cornstarch and water substitute. To do this, mix either 1 Tablespoon cornstarch or potato starch with 3 Tablespoons warm water. Use this as the egg.

Alternatively, you can also make a flax egg. To do this, mix 3 Tablespoons water with 1 Tablespoon ground flax seed and let it sit for 5 minutes.

Easy Lemon Aioli

Fries and aioli are a classic combination, so why not keep it going with asparagus fries? No need to put yourself through the complicated process of making aioli from scratch, just use mayonnaise as a base! Trust me, my lemon garlic aioli is creamy, decadent, and delicious. To make lemon garlic aioli, you will need:

  • mayonnaise
  • lemon zest
  • lemon juice
  • garlic powder
  • salt

This is one of the easiest aioli recipes you can make! Simply mix together the ingredients in a jar, refrigerate, and serve as a dip with your favorite fried recipes.

You can also use this aioli as a way to brighten up a turkey or chicken sandwich, which would make a great main dish for these asparagus fries. Another trick I like to do with aioli is to thin it out with extra virgin olive oil and use it as a creamy salad dressing. So many options!

How to Make Aioli with Lemon and Garlic

  1. Mix together mayo, lemon zest, lemon juice, garlic powder, and salt until thoroughly combined.
  2. Serve as a dipping sauce or refrigerate until ready to use.

Benefits of Using an Air Fryer

An air fryer is a countertop appliance that is similar to a convection oven. Air fryers quickly and beautifully cook food exactly as the name suggests: by quickly circulating hot air!

The benefits of owning an air fryer:

  • Deep fry food without the use of any oil
  • Roast, bake, broil, and even dehydrate food
  • Reheat meals you've already made
  • Quickly cook just about anything!

An air fryer cooks much faster than an oven or stove top. Because most of the heat stays inside, it can preheat within minutes. During the actual cooking process none of the heat is expelled into the open air. In fact, it's only intensified by constant circulation, cooking even frozen foods in record time.
